Yesterday I watched Oprah’s interview with Ted Haggard and family.  I was curious about why he has suddenly reappeared and was making the talk show/interview circuit.  Earlier this week he was interviewed by Larry King.  It seems as though Alexandra Pelosi, daughter of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, made a documentary about Ted Haggard that will air this evening on HBO.

Oprah did not give a soft interview.  She asked the questions that most people want to know and Mr. Haggard seemed to answer them honestly.  But in my opinion, he is either confused or in denial about his sexuality; but that’s between him and his wife.  I wasn’t interested in the salient details of his sexual escapades or any of his dirty laundry.  I wanted to know why he was doing these interviews.

It seems to me that all of this should have been embarrassing enough for him, his wife and his children when it was exposed two years ago.  Why would he want to rehash and relive it?

I was surprised to learn that part of his severance package from New Life Church barred Ted from ever preaching again and required him to move out of the state of Colorado.  That seems very harsh for Evangelicals who preach love and forgiveness and it also seems to be the reason Ms. Pelosi made the documentary – to explore how Christians treat each other.  By the time the show aired, the powers that be at New Life Church had allowed the Haggards to move back to Colorado.

Ted has paid a very high price for his indiscretions and I was saddened to witness his fall from grace.  During the summer of 1998 I visited New Life Church to attend an intercessory prayer conference and the opening of the World Prayer Center.  Regardless of his personal problems, New Life Church accomplished quite a lot under Ted Haggard’s leadership.  He was on the cutting edge of ministry.

I don’t have HBO so I won’t see the documentary.  I don’t know if it will address the Haggards reasons for resurfacing in the spotlight, but if does, I’m sure someone will let me know.

What do you think?
