Valentine Hearts Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching and most of us are looking at cards, flowers and candy for our spouse, children or “that someone special.”  Have you thought about the ministry volunteers at your church?  Do you show them some love?

Our churches would not survive without ministry volunteers.  All of those people who get up every Sunday morning, go to church and work for free.  Usually, my articles are directed to pastors, staff and ministry leaders, but this one is for lay people.

You can show some love to ministry volunteers without spending a lot of money.  This is something that I started doing about 10 years ago.  I was shocked at how effective it was.

This is what I do and you can too (or modify it to fit your personality)

  • Select a ministry to appreciate (don’t tell the ministry what you are doing)
  • Find out how many people are in that ministry
  • Purchase the appropriate number of boxes of Sweetheart Candy (yes the candy that school children buy)
  • Purchase the appropriate number of children’s Valentine cards and sign your name to them
  • On the Sunday before Valentines, give the goodies to the ministry leader to distribute to the volunteers, tell them you just want to appreciate their ministry for all the hard work they do

That’s all there is to it.  The surprise factor is the best part because the ministry does not expect it.  Two years ago, I celebrated our Security Ministry.  To my surprise, they all found me after church and thanked me.  Several of those big burly guys, who were not at church when the little boxes of candy and cards were distributed, found me the next week to get their candy and card.  For me, that was priceless.

I select a different ministry every year.  The amount of money I spend depends on the number of people in the ministry.  Last year I celebrated our ushers so that was a little more costly than usual.

Some Love Showing Suggestions

  • Parents:  Show some love to the nursery workers or children’s church volunteers
  • Late Comers:  Show some love to the parking ministry workers who find you a parking spot when the lot is full
  • Anyone:  Show some love to the greeters who meet you at the door with a smile
  • Ministry Workers:  If your church provides continental breakfast for ministry works, show some love to the people who set up the breakfast every week

These are just some thoughts to get you started.  Show some love to your Ministry Volunteers.
